About Our Programs

Carlsbad Behavioral Health Solutions offers a full continuum of mental health care designed to meet individuals at every stage of their recovery journey. Below are answers to the most common questions we receive about our treatment programs.

What levels of mental health treatment does Carlsbad Behavioral Health Solutions offer?
We offer a full continuum of care including Residential Treatment (24/7 live-in care for 30–90 days), Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) with 5–6 hours of daily structured treatment, Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) with 3 hours of treatment 3–5 days per week, and traditional Outpatient Therapy with weekly individual sessions. Each level is designed to meet clients where they are and support them through every stage of recovery.
How long do treatment programs typically last?
Program duration varies by level of care and individual needs. Residential treatment typically lasts 30–90 days, PHP programs run 2–4 weeks, IOP programs last 6–12 weeks, and outpatient therapy is ongoing based on your progress and goals. Your treatment team will continuously assess your progress and adjust the timeline to ensure you receive the right amount of care.
What is included in each treatment program?
All programs include individual therapy, group therapy, psychiatric evaluation, and medication management as needed. Residential clients also receive 24/7 nursing support, holistic therapies such as yoga and surf therapy, gourmet meals, and private or semi-private accommodations. PHP and IOP include similar clinical programming during treatment hours. Every client receives a personalized treatment plan tailored to their specific diagnosis and recovery goals.
What mental health conditions do you treat?
We specialize in treating a wide range of mental health conditions including major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex trauma, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, dual diagnosis (co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders), and other complex psychiatric conditions. Our multidisciplinary team creates individualized treatment plans for each condition.
How do I know which level of care is right for me?
The best way to determine the right level of care is through a free, confidential assessment with our admissions team. They will consider the severity of your symptoms, your daily functioning, your treatment history, your support system, and your personal goals. Generally, residential treatment is recommended for those needing 24/7 support, PHP for those who need intensive daily treatment but can live at home, IOP for those who need structured support while maintaining work or school, and outpatient for ongoing maintenance and growth. You can also take our free Treatment Level Assessment Quiz to get an initial recommendation.
Do you offer specialized tracks or programming?
Yes, in addition to our core programs, we offer specialized treatment tracks for trauma and PTSD, dual diagnosis (co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders), mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder, and anxiety-spectrum conditions. Each specialized track integrates targeted evidence-based therapies and clinical expertise tailored to the specific condition being treated.

Admissions & Insurance

We understand that navigating admissions and insurance can feel overwhelming. Our team is here to make the process as simple and stress-free as possible. Here are the most frequently asked questions about getting started.

Do you accept insurance for mental health treatment?
Yes, we accept most major insurance plans including most PPO plans and select HMO plans. Our dedicated admissions team provides free, confidential insurance verification and will work directly with your provider to maximize your benefits and minimize your out-of-pocket costs. We recommend calling us at (760) 400-6412 so we can verify your specific plan before you begin treatment.
How much does treatment cost without insurance?
The cost of treatment varies depending on the level of care and the duration of your program. We offer private pay options and can work with you to create a payment plan that fits your budget. We also offer financing options through third-party providers. Our admissions team can provide a detailed cost estimate during your initial consultation. We believe that cost should never be a barrier to getting the help you need.
What does the admissions process look like?
The admissions process begins with a confidential phone call to our admissions team at (760) 400-6412. During this call, we will conduct a brief clinical pre-screening, verify your insurance benefits, and answer any questions you have. If treatment is appropriate, we will coordinate your intake appointment, which typically takes place within 24–48 hours. On your first day, you will meet your treatment team, complete a comprehensive clinical assessment, and begin your personalized treatment plan.
Can I admit myself, or does a doctor need to refer me?
You do not need a doctor's referral to begin treatment at Carlsbad Behavioral Health Solutions. You can self-refer by calling our admissions line directly. Family members, therapists, physicians, and other healthcare providers can also initiate the admissions process on your behalf with your consent. We welcome referrals from all sources and work collaboratively with your existing care providers.
How quickly can I start treatment?
In most cases, we can begin the admissions process the same day you call and have clients admitted within 24–48 hours. For urgent situations, we offer expedited admissions. Our team understands that when someone is ready to seek help, timing matters, and we work quickly to remove any barriers to getting started.

What to Expect

Starting treatment can feel like a big step. Knowing what to expect helps ease the transition and allows you to focus on what matters most: your recovery.

What does a typical day in treatment look like?
A typical day in residential treatment begins with morning wellness activities such as yoga or guided meditation at 7:00 AM, followed by a gourmet breakfast. The morning includes individual therapy and group therapy sessions. After lunch, clients participate in specialty groups (such as CBT or DBT skills), holistic therapies, and have time for fitness or personal reflection. The evening includes dinner, an evening support group, and a structured wind-down period. PHP and IOP schedules follow a similar structure during their respective program hours.
Can I have visitors during treatment?
Yes, we encourage family involvement and have scheduled visiting hours, typically on weekends. We also offer family therapy sessions during the week. During the initial stabilization period (usually the first few days), we may limit outside contact to allow clients to settle in and begin focusing on their treatment. Specific visiting policies and schedules are provided during the admissions process.
Can I use my phone or communicate with family?
For residential clients, phone access is available during designated times each day. We encourage healthy communication with loved ones while also ensuring that clients can fully engage in the treatment process without distractions. Your treatment team will discuss specific communication guidelines during intake. PHP and IOP clients maintain normal communication with family and friends outside of treatment hours.
What should I bring to residential treatment?
We recommend bringing comfortable clothing, personal hygiene items, any prescribed medications in their original containers, a journal or notebook, books or other quiet leisure items, and a list of emergency contacts. We provide linens, towels, toiletries, and all meals. Our admissions team will provide a detailed packing list upon enrollment. For safety reasons, certain items are restricted and will be discussed during the intake process.
Is treatment confidential?
Absolutely. All treatment at Carlsbad Behavioral Health Solutions is strictly confidential and protected under HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and applicable state privacy laws. We do not share your information with anyone without your written consent, except in situations required by law (such as imminent danger to self or others). Your privacy is a fundamental part of the therapeutic environment we create.

Clinical Care

Our clinical programming is grounded in evidence-based practices and delivered by a team of experienced, licensed professionals. Here are common questions about the clinical side of treatment.

What types of therapy do you offer?
We offer a comprehensive range of evidence-based therapies including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), psychodynamic therapy, motivational interviewing, and family systems therapy. We also incorporate holistic modalities such as yoga, meditation, art therapy, music therapy, equine-assisted therapy, and surf therapy. Your treatment plan is tailored to your specific needs and may include a combination of these approaches.
Will I receive medication as part of my treatment?
Medication is not automatically part of every treatment plan, but it is available when clinically appropriate. Our board-certified psychiatrists conduct a thorough evaluation and will recommend medication management if they believe it will support your recovery. If you are currently taking medication, our team will review your regimen and make adjustments as needed. All medication decisions are made collaboratively with you, and our nursing staff monitors for effectiveness and side effects.
How is my family involved in the treatment process?
Family involvement is a key component of our treatment approach. We offer weekly family therapy sessions, family education workshops that help loved ones understand mental health conditions and how to provide effective support, and scheduled visiting hours. Family members are also included in discharge planning to ensure a smooth transition back home. We believe that strengthening the family system is essential for long-term recovery and can work with families both in-person and virtually.
Who will be on my treatment team?
Your treatment team at Carlsbad Behavioral Health Solutions is a multidisciplinary group of professionals including a board-certified psychiatrist, a primary therapist (licensed clinical psychologist, LMFT, or LCSW), group therapy facilitators, registered nurses, a wellness coordinator, and a case manager. This team meets regularly to review your progress, adjust your treatment plan, and ensure you are receiving coordinated, comprehensive care throughout your stay.
How do you measure treatment progress?
We use standardized clinical assessments at intake and at regular intervals throughout treatment to objectively track your symptom improvement and overall progress. Your treatment team also conducts weekly clinical reviews and solicits your own self-assessment of how you are feeling. Treatment goals are revisited and refined regularly to ensure that your plan remains aligned with your evolving needs and progress. This data-driven approach helps us ensure the best possible outcomes for every client.

After Treatment

Recovery does not end when you leave our facility. We are committed to supporting your long-term success through comprehensive aftercare planning and ongoing alumni resources.

What happens after I complete treatment?
Before you complete your program, your treatment team develops a comprehensive aftercare plan tailored to your needs. This may include stepping down to a lower level of care (such as PHP or IOP after residential treatment), ongoing individual therapy with an outpatient provider, continued medication management, support group participation, and connection to community resources. Your case manager helps coordinate all aftercare services so the transition is smooth and supported.
Do you have an alumni program?
Yes, we are proud of our active alumni program. After completing treatment, you have access to monthly alumni check-in calls, alumni support group meetings, social events and community gatherings, and ongoing access to our clinical team for guidance and referrals. Our alumni community provides a lasting network of support from people who understand your journey and are committed to long-term wellness.
What if I experience a setback or relapse after treatment?
Setbacks can be a normal part of the recovery process, and we want you to know that our door is always open. If you experience a relapse or worsening of symptoms after completing treatment, you can call our admissions line at any time. Our team will work with you to assess your current needs and determine whether a return to treatment, a higher level of care, or additional outpatient support is the best path forward. Early intervention during a setback can make a significant difference in your long-term recovery trajectory.
How do you help prevent relapse?
Relapse prevention is woven into every stage of treatment. During your program, you will develop a personalized relapse prevention plan that identifies your triggers, early warning signs, and specific coping strategies. We teach practical skills through CBT, DBT, and mindfulness-based practices that you can use in your daily life. Your aftercare plan includes ongoing support connections and resources. Our alumni program also serves as a safety net, providing regular check-ins and a community of peers who support each other in maintaining their mental health gains.
